Diverse soils are full of life. The healthier and more diverse the ecosystem, the more life is bubbling beneath our feet. Meanwhile, soils depleted by monocultures or polluted by pollution have less life, and therefore are more likely to be silent.
Participants of the project activity "Voices of the Utena Land: Experiential Soil Exploration" were able to experience this with their own ears. During this activity, two events "Listening to Soil Sounds" were held, organized by the Utena Business and Tourism Agency.
During the events, artist Dovilė Railaitė's project "See the Soil" was presented, inviting us to explore the invisible, yet vibrant world beneath our feet. The soil contains an entire ecosystem, the vitality of which can not only be explored, but also heard.
During the meetings, the participants listened to the sounds of soils from different European countries and got acquainted with the recordings made in the Utena district. The artist recorded the sounds of the soil in the meadows of the Kinderis limousine farm , the Skaistašilis forest , the Vyžuonai heath nature trail , the old growth forest in the Utena district, andDauniškis park. Each of these places revealed a unique, vibrant underground world.
The sounds recorded at the Ąžuolija Botanical and Zoological Reserve left a special impression. They surprised with their diversity and became a vivid reminder of the rich ecosystem that lies within healthy and vibrant soil.
"Listening to the Sounds of Soil" has become not only an artistic and educational experience, but also an invitation to take a closer look at the environment around us. Soil is the foundation of living nature, on which biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, and our own quality of life depend.
These meetings reminded us once again that soil is not just the surface of the earth. It is a living, constantly changing world, the condition of which is directly related to the quality of our environment and future.
Let's protect our homes. Let's protect the living soil.
The project is implemented under the "Implementation of the Special Program for Supporting Municipal Environmental Protection". The event is partially financed by the Utena District Municipality.
