THE TALKING DAUGAILIAI MOULD

An archaeological monument dating back to the 1st–2nd millennium BC. It is believed that in 1254 the Daugailiai Castle, which played an important role in defending the region, was built on the mound. At the end of the 17th century, the first Daugailiai church was built on the mound, and its churchyard contained a cemetery. The dead were buried on the top and slopes of the mound. This church was burned down by lightning. According to legend, it sank into the ground, but part of the altars with the paintings of saints were carried by the wind to the foot of the mound, where a new sanctuary was to be built. In 1990, an ornamented wooden cross was erected on the mound in memory of the first Daugailiai church. Older residents of the town say that earlier many strawberries were red around the mound. Having collected these delicious berries, local children would eat them themselves and treat others. Climbing the hill, you can admire the impressive panorama of the town. Adjacent to the hill is the homestead of Algimantas Petras Kavoliukas, who died on January 13, 1991.
